Boaters Against Plastic #01

— For immediate release —

Singapore, 24 November 2020: On a picture-perfect Saturday morning, 14 November 2020 – a group of boaters from the Singapore boating community rallied behind the efforts of the Singapore Marine Guide, supported by Seven Clean Seas, to bring awareness to the ever visible rubbish problem we see in the Singapore waters. This pilot event, lead by Nico Civelli’s M/Y Moana, saw 21 boats, four jet skis and 102 people join the first “Boaters Against Plastic” Singapore islands clean up, successfully taking an incredible 2,070kg of washed-up rubbish off the islands of Hantu, Lazarus and St Johns.

Given the current social distancing limitation and five pax per boat regulation, this pilot event was something in the making. It could only be attended if you had access to a boat. ONE15 Marina kindly hosted the communal rubbish trailer and was the start and endpoint of the event. Boaters picked up their reusable bags from the designated point at the marina around 9:00 am and made their way to the outlying islands, 16 boats going to Pulau Hantu and 3 to Lazarus and St Johns Island3 boats joined at Pulau Hantu from Republic of Singapore Yacht Club. With boats anchored around the islands and volunteers on the beaches, bags of rubbish were packed and picked up to be delivered to the boats at anchor, once the boats reached their capacity, they made their way back to ONE15 Marina to unload and receive their free drink

From the beginning, the “Boaters Against Plastic” event was well-received, supported by leading yacht media YACHT STYLE and luxury media Robb Report, along with recognised yacht dealers Hong Seh Marine and Simpson Marine, both vowing to bring their stock boats in support of the event. With a successful start, the event quickly gained momentum and had many groups without boats wanting to join in, presenting a fantastic opportunity for charter boats in the future. Of all the support for the event, none was more critical than Kairos Boats and RHIB rides, which enabled us to get the rubbish off the islands and onto the boats anchored in the channel along with a reliable quiver of rescue boats.

A huge thank you to all those who participated in the first “Boaters Against Plastic” event. We are planning to make this a monthly event involving each and all of the marina’s in Singapore, along with the various marine-focused conservation groups.
