Raffles Lighthouse

Raffles Lighthouse – A destiny Island to visit in Singapore

Located on the tiny island of Pulau Satumu, Raffles Lighthouse stands on the southernmost island of Singapore and it marks the point where ships coming out of Singapore Strait should start turning right into Malacca Strait. Another prohibited area that has an abundance of marine and coral life

Located on Pulau Satumu in the Singapore Strait, about 14 kilometers south of the main island of Singapore, lies Singapore’s second-oldest Lighthouse (Horsburgh Lighthouse being the oldest), Raffles Lighthouse. It is one of the only 3 offshore lighthouses in Singapore.

Standing at 29m tall, the still fully functional lighthouse was built from granite found in Pulau Ubin!

To help ships navigate along the Singapore Straits whilst avoiding nearby rocks and reefs, the lighthouse will give off three white flashes every 20 seconds. The light beam is currently powered by electricity, which replaces the traditional kerosene used back in 1968.

To ensure that the beacon is lit at all times, two lighthouse keepers will constantly be on duty, with both of them working on a rotating 12-hour shift schedule for 10 days.

Maritime Port Authority (MPA) often holds lighthouse open days, visitors will get the rare chance to climb Raffles Lighthouse’s 88 spiraling steps to the glass-paneled dome that sits 29m off the ground

Outside the 300m radius is one of the most popular fishing grounds in Singapore.

Approximate Position: 1°09’35.9″N 103°44’27.0″E

Berthing | Landing: PROHIBITED AREA AT PULAU SATUMU (RAFFLES LIGHTHOUSE) AND WATERS SURROUNDING A RADIUS OF 300 METRES AROUND THE LIGHTHOUSE

  • Patrol boats are often seen in the area
  • With such rich fishing grounds, be careful not to drift into the 300m surrounding radius

Sometimes the island is open to study groups, let us know if you have been there.
