Energy Observer Hydrogen fuel cell electric boat

Au revoir ENERGY OBSERVER!

It has been a really special experience over the past month working with the whole team at Energy Observer, from the uncertainties of COVID restrictions and building The EO Village to learning about the innovations onboard and helping crew the boat around Singapore. Such an amazing opportunity to see and learn about hydrogen technology and the maritime decarbonization sector firsthand rather than the usual reading about it somewhere and forgetting 2 minutes later,
Also very inspiring to see so much emphasis on maritime innovation and technology from MPA, the vision to encourage local companies to develop solutions in digitalization and decarbonization will be great to entice the new generation into the maritime industry and hopefully into the leisure marine industry
Before Energy Observer left we had one last trip out around the Southern Islands with Joseph Schooling and environmental ambassadors from ONE15 Marina, here are a few shots.

WAVES and MPA GUARDIAN

Friday 8 April,  we had the pleasure to crew on Energy Observer and be an invited guest of The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) at the announcement of a new waterfront innovation and technology centre ‘The WAVES’. ‘The WAVES’ or (Waterfront for All, innoVation, Enterprise, and Sustainability) will be an integrated waterfront development with a focal point on maritime innovation, sustainability, and talent development efforts in Singapore.

The MPA also unveiled the new 34-metre hybrid diesel-electric enhanced patrol craft, MPA GUARDIAN, during a commemoration ceremony at Marina South Pier. From the outside, it might look like just an ordinary large craft but onboard is incredibly well equipped to respond to any matter at seas, shallow water rescue capabilities, large drone deployment, chemical gas detectors, equipment to contain and respond to marine oil spills and a dedicated command centre room for emergency response.

Definitely, one of the highlights was touring around and discussing the innovations onboard Energy Observer with Senior Minister of State for Transport – Mr Chee Hong Tat – and the MPA Director (Innovation, Technology & Talent Development) – Mr Yi Han Ng. It is very encouraging to see so much emphasis being put into the decarbonization efforts in Singapore, it’s not going to happen overnight but the more solutions we are exposed to the higher the chances that we will have positive developments in reducing the impact on the environment.

What’s next for Energy Observer?

She might be gone but she will be coming back to Singapore in the not distant future as they now make their way up into the South China Sea with the next stop in the Gulf of Thailand visiting Pattaya, Hau Hin, and Koh Samui, after Thailand they will continue North to Cambodia and Vietnam before making their way back down to Singapore for a technical stopover for maintenance before they leave South East Asia for Sri Lanka and India.
