Pulau Jong

Pulau Jong Island in Singapore – Active reef sharks and turtles

Pulau Jong is a small island in the south of Singapore, totally uninhabited and surrounded by prohibited islands to its North and South. Close by Pulau Jong is the deepest water in Singapore Port limits at around 80m, this so happens to be the steepest drop off from land to 80m below sea level in less than a few hundred meters from the shore, making it one of the most diverse diving sites in Singapore.

General Info

About 3.5 nautical miles from Singapore’s mainland, Pulau Jong comprises a small rocky island around 60m high in the North, and a submerged rocky reef running 400m to its South until you reach “Jong” cardinal beacon. The island is largely inaccessible, hence it is both uninhabited and undeveloped.

Highlights

Most of the island is surrounded by rocks and reefs, with no landing jetty for boats to berth. If you approach the island from the west there is a small sandy beach that could be accessible via kayaks or smaller boats.

Pulau Jong is a diverse dive site, and not to be taken lightly due to its strong current, the site is not as popular among recreational divers as the other Islands but certainly holds its own when comparing marine life. If you are into sharks, this is a consistent nursery for black-tip reef sharks, if you go a few times to Pulau Jong, you’ll most likely see the local sea turtles amongst the seagrass on the west side.

Researchers and volunteers do dive every now and then to survey and keep an eye on the health of marine life in the waters surrounding the island.
